Texturing
Once the assets are modelled they are then handed over to our skilled artists to produce UV maps, textures and shaders to bring the characters and sets to life. Using a variety of hand drawn images, photographs and reference images we often build bespoke textures to suit the model. For characters we often use a variety of techniques such as ‘occlusion shaders’ and UV mapping to ensure the texturing is tidy and works as well close up as it does from a distance.
Quality, Time and Budget
The resolution and quality of the textures created does have a significant effect on render times and to produce the textures for a character it could vary from one day to several weeks. Movie quality, due to the sheer resolution and size of the screen, requires the highest quality and therefore costs the most. A low resolution animation for the web can get away with a lot lower quality, reducing timescales and costs.
